Project Proposals

Proposals

Project 1

My project is about technology. I think too many people relay on technology today. So many people think of technology as a necessity, as oppose to a privilege.  Not only regular phones, but Iphones and smart phones are becoming common to so many people that it’s not un-common for a young child to have one in some parts of the world.  Apple, created by Steve Jobs, started in the West Coast and spread all over the world. The reason why the big piece of technology is put in the West, is because it started there. I put in the text “Taking over?” because I think that people are so dependent on technology, that it is in a way taking over since it affects so many people. I emphasized on Apple because that’s one of the biggest technology companies and is very fast growing.

Project 2

The reading that I thought was the best was, “Steal Like an Artist” by Austin Kleon. I thought that was the best one because it was short and sweet. It actually had good meaning to the article, and I enjoyed reading it. I put a big sphere in the middle, representing the globe. In #7 it says “Geography is no longer our master” implying to surround yourself with what makes you happy. Which also goes along with #5 “Side projects and hobbies are important” because people get too caught up in just their daily life. I put ponds of water and a bunch of trees because I like nature and being outside. The big rectangle symbolizes a tennis court, because I like to play tennis. The lines are the net, and theres different kinds of courts that’s what the different textures are for.

Project 3

I made this piece because it shows how hectic and stressful life can get at times. Between peoples professional life and personal life. There’s always going to be obstacles that get in the way that you just have to try to figure it out. But at the end of the day, you should try to make the best of what you have.  Because if you really think about it, it could always be worse. I decided to make it because it reminds me of what my life is like right now. Just trying to make ends meet working hard, while trying to keep up with school, and attempting to maintain a personal life all at once. The connection between the sounds is first layer, the “original recordings” I’m a bartender so it’s just what a busy night is like just taking order after order running around. Second layer is ice-cubes and cans opening. Third layer is glass shattering. The sound I found was Cups by Anna Kendrick which is about her upset a relationship is ending, but looking at it from a more positive view. Because I was thinking, and in reality, it’s okay to be alone. People just want that extra support system, but you shouldn’t let one person make or break you. I edited the beginning adding the effect stretch and pitch making it faster, because I talk so much at work and is so fast paced. I edited the ice and cans with the convolution reverb to add more emphasis to it. And I edited the glass breaking with an echo to draw out how glass shattering is like the turning point when things get real rough.

Project 4

I did this project based around a video I took of my little sisters soccer. I go to her games a lot and we are really close, too. The first picture, with the spotlight edited on her is a picture at one of her games shooting for the goal. Which is also where the text comes in “score!” The video was of the whole team at an indoor practice. The soccer ball with the flames coming out, and strobelight so blinking was meant for the sport being fast paced. I love that song, so I decided it sounded good for this since its about sports and all.

Journal #12

Today we learned about Adobe Premier for our next project. We started out getting a video (I got mine from YouTube) and saving it online, and downloading it to finally put it in Premier. We learned about going into effects and color. Also about how to cut out shapes and make an edited video.

Journal #11

As I was working on this project working with Adobe Audition, I learned how to do things that I didn't know. I knew that of course there is sound edits because almost all music we hear has some. Whether its on the radio, TV, downloaded... they're there. I just never really thought to look into how to edit sound myself. I learned about the amplitude and some different effects they have to offer. There are some pretty interesting ones, and some pretty non-interesting ones. I like the effect stretch and pitch that makes your voice either speed up or slow down the most. I actually used it to speed up my voice in my project.

I uploaded my Project 3 to Sound cloud, here it is-

Journal #8

Journal #8

I read the reading, "ART VIEW; Virtual Reality: Is It Art Yet?"

Basically the whole thing was about Virtual Reality and different peoples view on it. Even though we all know its the latest and greatest computer technology, some people think theres more to it.  Mr. Mulligan made a virtual reality of illusionary space, referred to like a Star Trek.  If you want to make a full on three-dimensional illusion of virtual reality, its very expensive. I don't think I would pay the money for it, but a lot of artists do. Although, the reason a lot of artists don't is because of the price also. Something I do like about virtual reality is that it has links to earlier art- some with paintings and also with technology. Virtual reality is thought to be the "perfect medium" for the future generation of illusionistic video games. There are so many games of virtual reality they pop up everywhere now- whether in a bar to eventually rides at amusement parks.

Journal #7

This week I had another one-on-one meeting with Mr. Torres for project #2. I had some ideas for what I was going to do my project on, but wasn't positive how I was going to display it so he gave me some ideas.  I'm not very creative so was helpful having some ideas thrown out there. Its still in the making, but making progress.

Journal #6

This article, “JEAN BAUDRILLARD. SIMULACRA AND SIMULATIONS” I think was too long.  For a topic that didn’t interest me very much, it made me have to re-read a lot of the paragraphs because I would actually forget what I read. I don’t think there was a whole lot of point to it- didn’t really need a whole story if there was trying to be a point made. Maybe it was trying to tell us what still exists and doesn't exist? Not sure…

Reminded me more of like a history lesson, at some points reading a story about Italy. Or when it talks about the communists attacking the socialist party and wanted to shatter the union of the left. But then again it does tell you about how they’re trying to get the message across, psychological aspects,  power etc.  Ideology is a part of art because you have to be creative, and that's in there too.

I feel like to enjoy this article, you have to really have a true passion for art. So it would be a great interesting read for people that are in to these kinds of topics.

Journal #5

Journal #5

I read “Steal Like an Artist” by Austin Kleon. Honestly, probably the best thing I’ve read in this class. More useful in life than other short videos and random art historians, or art performers.. NOT theatre actors (they just look like they’re acting).
But on with Steal Like an Artist. It was a good read to me because it reminds you how you should really live life, because sometimes I feel like people get so caught up in things they forget what life is about. It basically reminds people, or tells people, little things that make life that much better. Like simply “be nice”- saying to stop correcting people and go do something. I’m not an artist, at all, but I feel like some artists should go read that because they get so into only liking other art people.  Another thing that I liked in this article was #9 "Geography is no longer our master".  I love that because we should surround our selves with people and things we love. If you don't like it some where you're at, why stay there? If you don't think you have a good life where you're at- do something about it.  It was encouraging to me reading it because it made me think of things I am doing right, and things I realized I could work on to be a better person.  The whole perception of the article was just refreshing reading thinking some people still think that positive way.

I downloaded some free cites this week in replace for Adobe, Gimp and Photo sketch. Gimp has been doing simpler things with layers and textures, photo sketch has different features though. Like for instance if you want to make a Sphere, you should use photo sketch. I, like making more of 3d pictures. Or 3d with textures. I'm slowly learning new things on here- so much to learn!

Aura and project

Journal #3

This week we started learning more into Adobe Photoshop. I've never worked with Photoshop before, so its all new to me. It is pretty interesting, but there are so many tools and information involved in Photoshop. Just making such a small project that you would think would be easy, takes a lot of time to learn. We went over how to change the size of canvas, different pixels, squares, layers,  adding pictures, and textures. Next step, I'll be working with Photoshop on my project. The reading "Cannibalist Manifesto" had different auras throughout it. It was about Catholicism ranging from the corrupt priests to the Saints, to attacks.  There were lots of different negative vibes throughout the reading.

Journal  #2

As we talked about some peoples perspectives of New Media, it seems like everyone has their own way they look at it. I think of it as New Media is taking over the world more and more every year. When I look at all of the technology we have now, it doesn't compare to Media we used to have. I remember in elementary school we had huge box computers and they were like the best thing ever being able to use them in school. And when I see my younger siblings now having assignments due online because computers are just so common now. Or cell phones, now almost everyone has one, its even normal for kids to have one. New Media and technology is really how the world goes round these days.

New Media

New Media

Week 1

On my first day of this AVT class, was also my first day of being at GMU from transferring over.  I don’t know a lot about computers and am not good at de-coding and would much rather go without it.  An advisor told me there was a class I may be interested in that I could take to fulfill my IT requirements.

When I got to class and started looking around at all of the Apple computers I could already tell it would be more interesting to me. Mr. Torres went over how the class would be ran through out the semester and the new materials we would learn such as new media vs old media, photo shop, and more. He also showed us a website “The Cluster project” which showed us some new media- www.theclusterproject.com . This website was really cool to me, I haven’t been on a website like this before. From what I know so far about this class, I think I will be learning a lot of new knowledge about Media. lk
